Definition: half the vertex angle of that cone within which optical power may be coupled into bound modes of an optical fibre

NOTE 1 – Acceptance angle is a function of position on the entrance face of the core when the refractive index is a function of radius in the core. In that case, it is:

arcsin [ n 2 ( r ) n 2 2 ] 1/2 MathType@MTEF@5@5@+=feaagCart1ev2aqatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLnhiov2DGi1BTfMBaeXatLxBI9gBaerbbjxAHXgarqqtubsr4rNCHbGeaGqipG0dh9qqWrVepG0dbbL8F4rqqrVepeea0xe9LqFf0xc9q8qqaqFn0lXdHiVcFbIOFHK8Feea0dXdar=Jb9hs0dXdHuk9fr=xfr=xfrpeWZqaaeqabiGaciGacaqadmaadaqaaqaaaOqaaiaabggacaqGYbGaae4yaiaabohacaqGPbGaaeOBamaadmaabaGaamOBamaaCaaaleqabaGaaGOmaaaakmaabmaabaGaamOCaaGaayjkaiaawMcaaiabgkHiTiaad6gadaqhaaWcbaGaaGOmaaqaaiaaikdaaaaakiaawUfacaGLDbaadaahaaWcbeqaamaalyaabaGaaGymaaqaaiaaikdaaaaaaaaa@4680@

where n (r) is the refractive index and n2 is the minimum refractive index of the cladding.

NOTE 2 – Power may be coupled into leaky modes at angles exceeding the acceptance angle.
