Term: depth of penetration, <in electroheat>
Synonym1: skin depth, <in electroheat>
Synonym2:
Synonym3:
Symbol:
Definition: thickness of an imaginary surface layer of an alternating current carrying conductor, assumed to carry throughout its cross-section a direct uniform current of the same value as the RMS value of the actual current, of the same material as the conductor, and dissipating through Joule effect the same heat per unit of external surface

Note 1 to entry: Eddy current density in the surface layer decreases to 1/e of its value at the surface.

Note 2 to entry: In French, "profondeur de pénétration" has different meanings for an electromagnetic wave (see IEV 705-03-25) and in superconductivity-related technology (see IEV 815-10-33).
