Synonym1: skin depth, <of an electromagnetic wave>

Definition: for a homogeneous isotropic medium of substantially infinite thickness limited by a plane surface, the depth at which the electric field of a sinusoidal uniform plane wave penetrating the medium and propagating normally to its surface is attenuated in the ratio 1/e

Note 1 to entry: The penetration depth expressed in metres is equal to the reciprocal of the attenuation coefficient, expressed in neper per metre, in the medium that the wave penetrates.

Note 2 to entry: In English, "penetration depth" is a synonym for "London penetration depth" in the field of superconductivity-related technology (see IEV 815-10-33) and “skin depth” has a different meaning for current density (see IEV 726-07-06).

Note 3 to entry: In French, "profondeur de pénétration" has different meanings for current density (see IEV 726-07-06) and in the fields of superconductivity-related technology (see IEV 815-10-33) and industrial electroheat (see IEV 841-27-21).
