Definition: the propagation time between two points on a ray path defined in terms of the group velocity vector by the line integral taken along the ray path:

1 v g ds MathType@MTEF@5@5@+= feaagKart1ev2aqatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbbjxAHX garuavP1wzZbItLDhis9wBH5garmWu51MyVXgaruWqVvNCPvMCG4uz 3bqee0evGueE0jxyaibaieYdi9WrpeeC0lXdi9qqqj=hEeeu0lXdbb a9frFj0xb9Lqpepeea0xd9s8qiYRWxGi6xij=hbba9q8aq0=yq=He9 q8qiLsFr0=vr0=vr0db8meWabaGacmGadiWaaiWabaabaiaafaaake aadaWdfaqaamaalaaabaGaaGymaaqaaiaadAhadaWgaaWcbaGaam4z aaqabaaaaaqabeqaniablgH7rlabgUIiYdGccaaMc8Uaciizaiaado haaaa@443A@

where vg is the algebraic value of the projection of the group velocity vector onto the tangent to the ray path, and ds is the corresponding curve element

NOTE – In practice, if the medium is not too absorbent, nor too anisotropic, nor too dispersive, the group delay is equal to the propagation time of the signal element used to define the group velocity.
